I guess this is my introduction post, yet we arrived in California Monday the 10th around 4pm local time, right on schedule. I’m the driver. Not necessarily in the sense of getting us motivated (but that’s me, too, sometimes), but in the sense of getting us from place to place in our vehicle. I’m Sol, and I’m the driver (and the dad, and the dog-father, and sir-dads-a-lot).
We have family in California and a need to see them. We chose to drive in order to avoid COVID-19. We’re wholly self contained and can (for the most part) control the environment around us. The mix of needing to get out west to see family; COVID-19 moving education and work to home; an amazing opportunity for a cross-country drive meant a remote lifestyle, at least temporarily, made sense. We can get work done for our respective companies, education of our 1st and 3rd graders, and expand our world.
Our vehicle of choice for this cross-country and around the country remote working and learning trek is a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4-door manual 6-speed and a JayCo Jay Feather Sport travel trailer. It’s been an awesome adventure and aside from an 8-hour slog through the Mojave when the transmission seemed to overheat (it was 106 degrees and we were on a long incline with a strong headwind), both the Jeep and trailer have been serving us well.
Along with the driving, I’m doing about 3/4 time entertaining and attending to the girls (and having a blast in the process). I’m working about 1/4 time. There will also be their education and a little organizing (but Galina is by far the better organizer). Their school starts in their Downingtown Cyber Academy school soon and we’ve brought their computers along so they’re ready to start.
We departed Chester Springs, Pennsylvania on July 29th with a destination of Cambria, California planned for August 10th. We’re here and have maintained a good schedule. We plan to remain here in California, living mostly from our trailer, until August 22nd or 23rd. Then we’ll head north through Mendocino, the Redwoods, Crater Lake, Craters of the Moon, Yellowstone, Tetons, Glacier National Park, and then maybe some other places… TBD.
I’ll post some pics posted of our travels so far, and will keep them coming as we continue our journey. We’re working remote, studying remote, and touring the America we live in. Flexibility and exploration are our mantras.
Follow along and let us know what we should see along the way or what to avoid.
